Physical exortion increases blood pressure

High-performance horses are subject to enormous physical strain in active sports, competitions and races.
In particular, the lungs are challenged with increased activity: In order to maintain the performance of the muscles, they have to provide sufficient oxygen in a short period of time.
For this reason, significantly more blood flows at high speed through the pulmonary capillary system than with moderate or light exposure. This changes the pressure conditions in the pulmonary capillaries / aveoli and ruptures of the blood-gas barrier occur: blood passes into the capillary system.

Loss in performance due to lack of oxygen supply

The entire gas exchange is disturbed and less oxygen can be provided to the muscles. The result is a noticeable drop in performance, which often decides on victory or defeat in the sport in the last few meters. Latest studies show that 12-15% of all defeats are bases on a drop in performance due to a lack of oxygen supply for the muscles.

Excercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage can affect horses of all breeds & sports

Many riders and trainers of high-performance horses are not aware that these performance losses are not due to a lack of training condition and incorrect energy supply, but to an impairment of the gas exchange in the lungs.
Almost all horses in high-performance sport experience a rupture of the sensitive capillaries. Only with a small percentage is this also shown by externally visible bleeding from the nostrils. This variant mainly affects horses in racing, which is why excercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH) is incorrectly associated with racing, although it can affect high-performance horses of all breeds and sports.
